Bundle Up and Fight Back: Your Sacramento Winter Cold & Flu Survival Guide

Sacramento and Carmichael residents know that our winters are gentler than most — but don't let those sunny December afternoons fool you. Cold and flu viruses thrive in cooler, drier air, and indoor gatherings during the holiday season create the perfect conditions for illness to spread. At AmpleHealth, we want to help you get ahead of the season before you're reaching for the tissues.

Get Your Flu Shot — Yes, Every Year

The single most effective thing you can do is get your annual influenza vaccine. The flu virus mutates each year, which is why a new shot is recommended every season. It's not too late to get vaccinated even in January or February. If you're not sure whether you've received yours, give our office a call — we can check and get you scheduled quickly.

Wash Your Hands Like You Mean It

Handwashing remains one of the most powerful tools against viral illness. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public spaces, before eating, and after blowing your nose. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your car or bag for moments when a sink isn't nearby.

Support Your Immune System From the Inside Out

Your lifestyle habits directly affect how well your immune system responds to threats:

  • Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours per night. Sleep deprivation significantly weakens immune defenses.
  • Hydration: Even in cool weather, staying well-hydrated helps your body flush out pathogens.
  • Vitamin D: Northern California winters mean less sun exposure. Ask Dr. Kamra whether a Vitamin D supplement makes sense for you.
  • Zinc and Vitamin C: These nutrients may reduce the duration of a cold when taken at the first sign of symptoms.

Know When to Stay Home — and When to Come In

Most colds resolve on their own within 7–10 days. However, you should contact AmpleHealth if you experience:

  • A fever above 103°F or a fever that lasts more than three days
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • Symptoms that improve and then suddenly worsen
  • Severe sore throat without a cough (which can indicate strep)

Don't Forget Your Other Preventive Care

Cold and flu season is also a good reminder to make sure your other vaccinations are up to date, including pneumonia and COVID-19 boosters, which are especially important for patients over 65 or those with chronic health conditions.
