PRP for Skin Rejuvenation: Science Meets Beauty
Platelet-rich plasma offers a safe, minimally invasive treatment option for various skin concerns. Discover how PRP works and the types of issues it can address, so you can determine whether it’s right for you.

When you look in the mirror, do you feel self-conscious due to wrinkles, scarring, or skin discoloration? Know that you aren’t alone. A recent survey found that 59% of American adults feel uncomfortable in their own skin and wish they could do something about it.

Some people assume the only way to treat skin issues is to undergo an invasive procedure like cosmetic surgery. But thanks to advances in treatment, that’s no longer the case. Take platelet-rich plasma (PRP), for example.

At Ample Health in Carmichael and Sacramento, California, our board-certified internists use PRP to treat skin conditions such as wrinkles, sagging skin, hyperpigmentation, and scarring.

Here, we explain what PRP is, how it rejuvenates the skin, and what to expect during treatment.

Platelet-rich plasma: An overview

Platelet-rich plasma is a type of regenerative medicine designed to support your body’s natural tissue repair and renewal processes.

The treatment involves taking a sample of your blood and isolating the platelets and growth factors inside it. Once that process is complete, we transfer the platelet-rich solution to a syringe and inject it into strategic areas of your skin.

After the PRP solution enters your body, it increases blood flow to the treatment sites and encourages the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that keep your skin smooth, firm, and plump.

How PRP rejuvenates the skin

PRP rejuvenates your skin by supporting collagen and elastin production and boosting circulation. Together, these factors may improve skin texture and tone and help minimize the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Mild sagging

We often combine PRP with microneedling so your skin better absorbs the treatment. During microneedling, we use a handheld tool called a dermaroller or dermapen to make microscopic puncture wounds in your skin. This allows the PRP to penetrate your skin more effectively and often leads to better results.

What to expect during PRP for skin rejuvenation

PRP for skin rejuvenation is an outpatient procedure that typically takes an hour or less.

If we determine that you can benefit from treatment, we draw some of your blood and place it in a centrifuge, which separates platelets from your sample.

Once the platelet-rich solution is ready, we place it in a syringe and inject it into specific places, such as your forehead or the sides of your eyes.

The number of injections you receive will depend on the skin conditions you want to address and their severity. But many people get 10-15. We numb your skin with a topical anesthetic beforehand to ensure your comfort.

Once treatment is complete, you can return to work and other activities right away. It’s normal to experience mild redness or sensitivity at each injection site, but these side effects should improve within 24-48 hours.

Benefits of PRP for skin rejuvenation

PRP for skin rejuvenation offers a nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment option for a variety of skin concerns. Since it uses your own blood, there’s little risk of infection or other side effects, and we can safely use it on your face, neck, and chest (décolletage).

The results look natural and appear gradually over time, so your friends and family are less likely to ask whether you’ve had any work done.
